Cerete
Heraklio is the largest city in Crete and the the capital of the
island Heraklion a busy town, a communications hub that receive
and distribute most tourism traffic arriving on the island, but
light industry and Agriculture in the periphery, also affect the
life.Iraklio is located in the middle of the north beach, really
close to Knossos and has one of the most interesting archeological
museums of the world.
Agios Nikolaos, a town bursting with life, lights,
colour and the Cretan heartbeat, welcome its visitors throughout
the year in a cosy warm atmosphere.
In the beautiful gulf of Mirambellou, Agios Nikolaos
is today the first touristic center of Crete. Thanks to the wonderful
shores and the many sites, this city hosts thousands of visitors
every year , with its fine touristic infrastructure and at the
same time keeps its tranquility and traditional hospitality.
The lake of Agios Nikolaos is obviously the most
beautiful ornament of the town. It is linked to the sea by a narrow
canal, which adds to the beauty of the lake, while its natural
surrounding red rocks between the trees turn it into a site of
great attraction as one can enjoy a wonderful view while sitting
comfortably at any of the coffee shops next to the multi colored
fishing boats.
Rethymnon, one of the four provinces of Crete,
is a town that has retained its traditional look. You can confirm
this as you stroll through its old, narrow lanes with the wooden
balconies, the tall minarets and the Venetian mansions.
Rethymnon is divided into the old and the new
town. The new one is built in a comfortable spacious and planned
manner and with plenty of green spots, but as usual, the best
strolls are made in the old town's little alleys.
Samos
Samos, one of the most easterly Aegean islands just a stone's
throw from the coast of Asia Minor, is renowned for its wines,
particularly for the white muscat wine found nowhere else.
The capital, Vathi, is built on the verdant slopes
that surround the island's deepest bay. Vathi has retained its
individual appearance, with its attractive neoclassical houses,
old mansions with pastel facades.
From Vathi, if you take the road heading south,
your first stop will be Pithagorio (familiarly known as Tigani,
14 km.), a small, picturesque port occupying the site of the ancient
capital.
To the right of the port the castle of Lycourgos
Logothetis can be seen atop a hillock. This 19th century edifice
most probably rests on the ruins of the former acropolis. Within
its walls are two Roman colonnades as well as the remains of Early
Christian churches.
Not far from Pithagorio is the archaeological
site of the Heraion, with its sanctuary to Hera of Samos, one
of the biggest of antiquity.
Karlovassi on the north coast of the island,
is its second largest harbour, composed of three districts, Old,
New and Middle Karlovassi. Here, too, you will find imposing neoclassical
houses, reminders of earlier prosperous times, while 2 kilo metres
away bathers will love the sandy beach of Potami, rimmed with
luxuriant greenery.
The drive between Vathi and Karlovassi runs along
the magical coastline, cutting through riotous vegetation and
picturesque villages. Six kilometres south of Karlovassi, set
in marvelous surroundings, is the village of Marathokambos, which
acts as a "balcony" over the island's southern beaches
and has both old churches and caves to explore.
Still further south is the tiny harbour of Ormos,
good for fishing and swimming, while beyond it lies a string of
lovely beaches - Votsalakia, Hrissi Amos, Ai Gianis Eleimonas.
Chios
South of Lesvos lies one of the most beautiful islands of the
Aegean: Chios, where the green of the trees and the aquamarine
of the sea are within kissing distance.
Here the verdant valleys embrace the pretty towns
redolent with mastic from the countless chewing gum trees (actually
mastic-trees).
Multi-coloured houses, fishing boats, and nets
spread out in the old harbour.
Modern houses and busy houses decorate the plain
villages such as Vrondados, Pantoukios, and Lagadas. Good beaches
at Kardamila. Alpine scenery with rare beauty at Volissos, such
as the Venetian fort and the historic monastery of Agios Georgios.
Enchanting scenery just before Nea Moni. Villages unchanged since
the middle ages at Anavato and Mesta. Pottery workshops at Armolia
and painting compositions at Pirgi. |
